Several questions must be answered before you can access WebET and take advantage of Electronic Timekeeping.
Do you have a workstation connected to either the CACI backbone (WAN, MAN or LAN) or the Internet? The connection doesn't have to be permanent. For instance you can dial in to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or connect to CACINet using VPN.
Does your workstation have a current version of IE? The CACI Enterprise standard browser is Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE). IE version 5.5 is recommended. The full install of version 5.5 has the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) build into the software. WebET needs the JVM. If you do not have IE5.5 you will find it on the VPN distribution CDs that are currently available from the CIS Technical Assistance Center (TAC). If you do not have a VPN CD then you may also download IE from a CACI internal site. IE is also available from Microsoft but the time to download will be significantly slower.
Is your manager using WebET?
If the answer to all three questions is "Yes", then you should be able to access WebET.
Next you must decide which version of WebET to use. There are two versions.
WebET has a light weight version that only requires IE5.5. This version is referred to as "WebET Lite". Everything you need is already on your workstation if you have IE5.5. The Java Virtual Machine is build into the browser. This version is best suited for users at non-CACI sites with slower connections to the Internet. Generally, if your connection speed to the Internet is less than 128K you should use this version. A second consideration is whether the non-CACI site permits "Client-side Java". Check with your local LAN administrator. If you are prohibited from downloading software onto the workstation then the "WebET Lite" version is the right choice. The URL for "WebET Lite" is https://caciet.caci.com/index_http.html.
WebET has a Java Applet version that not only requires IE5.5 but also needs to have the Java Runtime Engine (JRE) downloaded from Sun Microsystems. This version is referred to as "WebET Swing" because it uses a development technology call "Swing". This version has a more sophificiated interface with features like "Tool Tips" for the buttons at the top of the timesheet. In general, the interface has more of a "Windows" look and feel. The application is larger in size and takes longer to display if you are on a slow connection. Generally, it is recommended that you use this version if you are on a high speed connection to the CACI backbone. Again, a general rule of thumb is that your connection speed to the IntraNet be 128K or above. Check with you local LAN administrator if you are unsure of the connection speed. The first time you access "WebET Swing" you will be guided through the install of the JRE. The URL for "WebET Swing" is http://et4.hq.caci.com.
