Does encryption change the Date Modified field for encrypted files?

In order for encryption to work properly the file must be opened and modified by the system. Since the Date Modified field is changed whenever a file is modified the Date Modified field will change whenever the file is initially encrypted. However, once a file is encrypted the Date Modified field only changes when the user updates or modifies the contents of the files again.
